I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in Linguistics (First Class Honours, David Thompson Scholarship) and Management Studies (Upper Second Class Honours) in 2014, and went on to complete an MA in Translation Studies (English and Spanish to German) in 2015.
I have been working as a tutor all throughout my student years and have since established my own tutoring company with a well-rounded group of Cambridge tutors to support students and adults alike with their academic or language learning progress. My experience and academic background has allowed me to regularly contribute to various national newspapers in Austria and Germany on education and language learning issues.
In my free time, I work for the charity 'Art Relieves Poverty', an NGO I founded with my sister in 2011 which supports education and artistic engagement for disadvantaged children in the Philippines. Working as a tutor helps me to stay connected with the minds, lives and needs of children and young people, and to continuously improve the educational offering of the charity.
Aside from volunteering, I enjoy the arts, music, and sports, especially outdoor sports such as skiing, hiking, windsurfing and scuba diving.
I started tutoring in 2009 and have worked with dozens of wonderful students. My students have consistently achieved their desired grades and skill levels, and have gained entry into the countries most prestigious schools (including Eton and Westminster school) and universities (Cambridge, Oxford, UCL).
These are just some of the comments my previous students have made:
“Vanessa tutored my daughter for her A level English Language exam in 2013. Katie (18) learnt a lot from the 1 to 1 sessions, she really felt they helped her to understand the subject and achieve the grade she needed to gain entry to her chosen university. Vanessa was always friendly and helpful. I would really recommend her as a tutor.” – Alison H.
“We have had a number of tutors, but Ben (11) really likes Vanessa and is now actually looking forward to the sessions! He says he understands her better than his previous tutors and they get on incredibly well which is mainly due to the fact that Vanessa has just such a lovely personality.” – Clare S.
“I am delighted to see how well things are going with Vanessa. Initially I had only wanted her to help John (13) with Maths, but they have such lovely rapport going on, and she really seems deeply interested in his progress, so I’ve decided to ask her for help with English as well.” – Mike G.
What I love about 1-2-1 tuition is that usually it's possible to build a warm, personal relationship with the student very quickly. This provides the perfect foundation for learning, as it inspires confidence, improves attention and allows for instant bidirectional feedback on progress. The measure of my success is very closely linked to the student's progress and satisfaction with my teaching.
Through my personal academic career, I have found that any achievement was fundamentally based on a structured and goal-oriented approach, as well as confidence. I appreciate everyone's differences and carefully tailor each lesson to suit each student's individual needs and personality. I work out bespoke tuition plans, based on the student's goals, the content that needs covering, deadlines, and skills such as question analysis, critical and analytical thinking, memorization and note-taking. Students are in complete control of their learning process and any questions, concerns or difficulties they have can be answered immediately and appropriately and my teaching style can be adapted at any time. It is these personalised factors that make one-to-one tuition, whether face-to-face or online, one of the most effective ways of teaching there is and a sure-fire way to reach academic goals.
