Home Tuition for English in Chelsea

I am a self-employed writer and tutor with a BA in English Literature from UCL, and my knowledge of and passion for literature runs deep! I'm friendly, professional and communicate well. I have worked as a researcher, writer and public speaker. Private tutoring means that I get to pass on my love for English and learning to my students, as well as ensuring the flexible hours I need for other writing commitments.

While I focus on English, I will soon be able to provide tutoring in Maths, Biology and Geography in the near future - if any of these would be useful to you now, get in touch and let's have a chat.

Tutoring Experience

I have worked as a private tutor since October 2016. All four of my GCSE and A-level students from last year achieved excellent grades in their English exams. With regard to students who have yet to take their exams, I've had excellent feedback from both these students and their parents, reporting a definite improvement in their schoolwork as noted by their teachers.

During my time at UCL, I worked as a mentor to fellow students. This role involved supporting first-year undergraduate students through their first term and encouraging them to think about different ways to approach their coursework. In my third year, I was chosen as Senior Mentor, which meant I oversaw and assisted the ten student mentors in the English Department.

I was a voluntary education assistant at the Ragged School Museum in Mile End - working with classes of primary school children, I would demonstrate and explain to them the daily workings of a lower class Victorian kitchen. I sincerely enjoyed passing on the knowledge I had about the Victorians and the children were always interested and had questions after a forty-five-minute session - the Victorians did indeed have cornflakes, for example!

Tutoring Approach

I like to discuss individual needs with each new tutee. For example: what aspect or aspects of their course they are struggling with, which book or poem they can't quite understand, or how to make their essays sparkle and hit assessment objectives. Then we work together to create useful, productive sessions. For one person this may be a pop quiz at the start of each session, for another it may be quietly working for part of the session and then going over the work with me. English is a wide and varied subject and my approach is similarly varied, but always structured and with the tutee's needs in mind.
