Ursula

Clapham Tutor

My name is Ursula, and I work as a Visiting Lecturer in the English Department at Royal Holloway University. I also work as an examiner marking English Lit/Lang/Creative Writing papers for AQA, OCR and Edexcel examining boards at GCSE and A Level. I have been tutoring for coming up to four years, and what began as a canny way to earn an extra bit of pocket money, is now increasingly becoming a key part of my professional life, simply because I find it incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. With my experiences of tutoring, lecturing and examining combined, I have a pretty unique insight into the world of education, and use this to the benefit of my students. Thus far, all of my students have drastically improved: achieving or surpassing their predicted grades! I'm very proud of this statistic.

In terms of my qualifications: I graduated from Royal Holloway with a first-class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing in 2013, receiving two departmental academic awards in addition. I received a further scholarship to study a MA in Shakespeare, which I completed in 2014 with a Distinction. I am currently waiting for my viva examination for my PhD completion. My PhD considers the figure of the parasite in Shakespeare's work.

NOTE: There are two unpublished reviews on my page: these are unpublished because the reviewees are reviewing the FirstTutor website and NOT my services. These two reviews have taken my five star rating down to a four star: I am in the process of trying to get them removed!

Tutoring Experience

Primary School Level: I have tutored children from the ages of six to eleven, and thoroughly enjoy engaging each child in the learning process. From punctuation, grammar and spelling, to the slightly more ambiguous areas of persuasive, creative and critical writing. I have worked with children over long periods of time (several years), offering additional support alongside extensive periods of schooling. I am confident and experienced in tutoring international and home-schooled children, and children with mild forms of autism, ADHD and dyslexia.

Secondary School Level: I have plenty of experience tutoring GCSE, IB, and A Level students. Due to my work as an examiner with three of the UK's leading exam boards, I have good insight into how to successfully prepare for these exams. I have worked with students preparing for exams, working on coursework, and revising for resits. I offer classes dedicated to learning how to answer exam questions: by this I mean understanding the importance of timing, pre-planning answers, learning the formulaic structures which can be learnt prior to exams which ensure answers achieve maximum marks effectively and efficiently. However, most important to the success of every student is self-confidence: mindset is key, and my students will always enter an exam knowing that they have the best possible chance of achieving success.

For potential university level and casual learners, my areas of expertise are as follows: Shakespeare, Renaissance fiction, French Theory, Feminist Theory, Contemporary Poetry, Critical Thinking, History of the Novel. I offer essay and dissertation feedback for university students: I am happy to do this outside of my areas of specialism.

Tutoring Approach

My primary concern is always the well-being and confidence of my student. I am a naturally chatty and friendly individual, and I tend to bring students out their shell quite quickly. One-on-one tutoring can be a bit of an intense experience for children, particularly when you factor in the additional confusion that there is suddenly a complete stranger in a home environment asking them to talk about books! All this aside, I build genuine rapport with my students, from which a good working relationship can be formed, and through which we can make progress. I am a firm believer in creative learning, and will gauge how a student learns best, and adapt my lessons to suit this.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
