Personal Description:

I gained a 2:1 in Sociology and Social Policy in 2003 after attending university as a 'not so mature student'! I have been employed within the education sector since this time. I am in the process of completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching with the University of Worcester. This is to ensure I stay up to date with current thinking in this ever changing field of academic study. Not all of my experience is teaching - I worked for three years in a pastoral capacity in secondary schools completing one to one and group sessions with students for a range of reasons - underachieing in education, behavioural, attendance and punctuality issues, to name but a few.

Tutoring Experience:

I am an A Level Sociology and Psychology teacher at a school with a sixth form cohort of approximately 300 students. Psychology and Sociology are the two most popular subject choices within the Sixth Form and my classes are consistently oversubscribed. I have an impressive AS Level success rate alongside a one hundred per-cent pass rate at A2 Level. I have spent time as Assistant Head of Sixth Form and I am currently Head of Department for Sociology and Psychology . I have many years experience of examining for a reputable examination board.

Tutoring Approach:

Each tutee is unique, therefore it is difficult to specify exactly what you will get from me! The starting point is always going to be to establish exactly what your needs are - subject knowledge, understanding of key themes and perspectives, exam technique, study skills - there are many possibilities and combinations of areas to tackle. Together we will establish your needs and draw up an action plan that improves your chances of success in the one thing that ultimately matters - that dreaded exam! I will provide resources for the session alongside extension tasks to be completed at home in advance of our next session. Exam questions, while not the most exciting of tasks, will also play a part. Many students underachieve due to exam technique as opposed to understanding or knowledge. I will ensure that work we complete together compliments work being undertaken in your school, therefore it will be necessary for me to know what exam board you are currently studying with alongside what topics you are covering. Teaching and learning are not isolated events. They happen through working together as a team. This is my philosophy to teaching and tutoring.
