Media / Communication Studies
A 50 year old Oxford graduate, I have 28 years experience of successful teaching and tutoring English across the 11- 18 age and ability range. I have marked for exam boards, on and off for most of my career so I know how to achieve the grades. I have also worked on setting the SATs papers and tutored adults for professional qualifications.
I liked being a form tutor, staying in touch with my ex-students, which keeps me young. I am used to hearing confidences, seeing successful lives, and providing after-care in an academic crisis.
I travel widely. I am fascinated by other countries and other cultures. I try to pick up a few words of the local language, even if it is written in another alphabet - it's good for a teacher to remember what it is like to struggle a bit.
I am a qualified English teacher familiar with AQA at GCSE, AS and A Level in English Language and Literature, as well as Media and cross-curricular literacy. Many of my students achieved A* at A Level, & several went on to Oxbridge places. I have worked with Gifted and Talented students aiming at A and A* to raise their achievements, confidence and self-esteem not only in English but also other subjects. I completed the Philosophy for Children training, extending pupils' thinking skills.
At the other end of the ability range, I am familiar with the PiXL approach, working with selected groups to raise their predicted results as well as 1:1 tutoring. I have some experience preparing students for iGCSE and vocational literacy qualifications. I am familiar with a variety of special needs and trained to meet them.
I have worked in inner city schools and the leafier suburbs.
I am friendly but fussy, making sure students recognise and show off their skills, as well as extending what they can do.
I find out students' strengths, anxieties, and needs in the opinions of parents and the students: general English skills or examination preparation: raising grades or pre-U prep; catching up or going beyond. I share the plan with the learner, and we agree a way forward. I aim to build confidence and enjoyment by breaking the study into manageable chunks using a variety of teaching approaches, to improve on weak areas and correct errors. I can focus on basic English skills such as reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and oral work. I also support students in their course work as well as planning and exam technique.
I set up tasks for error-free learning, so that students build resilience, grit and confidence as well as their skills. (If you "fail", what does your "failure" tell us?)
Most students struggling with exams do not recognise the requirements of the questions, so practice and support can unlock them. I am happy to work with different exam boards or assessments, or support other subjects where English skills are preventing the achievement of potential…
