I am an specialist teacher of mathematics with over 20 years experience in secondary schools and sixth form colleges. My passion for mathematics dates back to my own school days and continued through my university degree course and into my teaching career. I have spent most of my career as the Head of Mathematics in an inner-city secondary school, inspiring students to enjoy mathematics and push themselves to the highest possible GCSE grades. In my subject leader role, I created stimulating interactive resources that clearly and effectively helped students to understand and master aspects of the subject that they had previously found difficult. My work also involved providing training for staff colleagues and other maths teachers around the city to devise such resources and new teaching techniques.
My teaching career has seen me teach in three large city secondary schools, including two with sixth forms, and one sixth form college. Therefore I have regularly taught students throughout the 11-19 age range during my career, as well as adults/parents in special targeted sessions aimed at improving support for students at home.
I believe it is essential to capture the interest of the student to inspire them to engage proactively with the learning. Particularly with students that may be lacking confidence, it is crucial to be able to demonstrate to them, clearly, the progress they are actually making. By doing this, I inspire and motivate my students, and facilitate an acceleration of their progress towards their goals as they grow in confidence. It is important to set out the goals and objectives at the very start of the process, so that there can be a shared sense of the "journey" by both student and tutor. I maintain clear dialogue with parents/guardians about progress and ways in which the student can be further supported.
