I'm Tom James Mcmahon. I'm a music graduate and Piano teacher who has recently moved back to York.
I have been teaching music and the piano for years with kids ranging from 5 to adults in there 60's! Literature and music have long been passions of mine and learning and teaching has long been an interest. I am very adept at finding the way different people learn and adapt so that they both enjoy the experience and learn more quickly.
I studied as a music scholar at Wells Cathedral school and subsequently completed a music degree at York university. I have grade 8 with distinction and an advanced knowledge of theory. I teach all sides of music education to a high level- performance, theory, academic writing. I am also versed in a variety of genres- particularly Jazz and classical. I charge £30 ph for all music related teaching. As an experienced performer, composer and academic of music I am able to pass on my passion, expertise and make learning a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
Literature has been a passion of mine from an early age and a subject I have always excelled in. Though I did not pursue it at university I took a very active role in the poetry society. I am able to help students see the relevance of literature to them and thus take a new pleasure in the study of it and motivate them to take that further.
Piano teaching for around 6 years for students from 5 and upwards. Homework and mentoring help.
I take a fresh, creative approach. I seek to find what inspires my students and believe learning can be enjoyable and fun whilst still achieving excellent results. My Classical and Jazz training has led me to believe in a balance of rigour, technique and discipline with joy, expression and experimentation. Though it may not seem this is easily the case with exams I believe there is always a way to find enjoyment in learning and in sharing knowledge whilst ensuring you play by the rules and satisfy the exam criteria.
