My name is Tom Shakespeare and I am currently a 1st year Structural Biology PhD student at the University of Portsmouth. Prior to this I worked as an Analyst at an environmental testing laboratory near Winchester. I studied Biology, Chemistry, Law and IT at A-level before moving to the University of Portsmouth to study BSc Biochemistry in 2013. In 2016, I graduated with an Upper Class (2.1) degree before negotiating a paid summer placement in the University's Biophysics labs. This then led on to a full time MRes (2016-2017) for which I obtained a Distinction.
I have no one-to-one teaching experience at the moment, however I have frequently helped my younger sibling with various pieces of homework along with a family friend who required help with GCSE mathematics.
I have helped out at four department open days which required me to speak to potential students and parents and demonstrate some basic laboratory experiments.
I have also recently assisted a Postdoctoral researcher in an "Outreach" event that took place at the University. This event invites secondary school students to the University to take part in some hands on science.
My first aim will be to reveal the styles of learning that best suit the tutee. This will allow me to tailor my teaching style so that the student gets the most out of the work being set. It will then be imperative to assess strengths and weaknesses across topics and subjects to highlight what areas require a deeper understanding. I will also incorporate a variety of revision strategies. These may be in the form of mind maps, flow charts, flash cards and tailored exam questions.
