Personal Description:

I am a very experienced Chemistry teacher with GCSE and ‘A’ level examining experience. I work full-time as a professional tutor and have established a reputation for success and reliability.

I was educated at Baines Grammar School, Poulton-le-Fylde in Lancashire and I graduated from Leeds University in 1979 with a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry with a First Class Maths Subsidiary. I stayed at Leeds University to do Physical Chemistry research. I obtained a job as an oil technologist for Royal Dutch Shell Oil before becoming a laboratory supervisor at Queen Elizabeth College, London.

I live in Morpeth with my wife who works as a teacher in children’s centres and our rescue dog. My children are grown up: my daughter is a Maths graduate and works in computer programming and my son is an ICT specialist in the army. I am an avid fan of The Beatles; I am vegetarian and I enjoy walking my dog.

Tutoring Experience:

I trained to teach at Goldsmiths’ College, London, where I had teaching practices at Haberdashers' Aske's School, New Cross and Crown Woods, Eltham. I was offered my first teaching posts in 1984 at Manchester Grammar School and The King Edward VI School, Morpeth, choosing the latter, where I taught ‘A’ level and GCSE Chemistry, before becoming Head of Chemistry in 1989 and then Head of Science at Blyth Ridley County High School. I became an examiner for GCSE and ‘A’ level Chemistry with three exam boards, including AQA. I moved into Northumberland’s education support service in 2002 where I worked with looked after children 1:1 in Chemistry, Science and Maths. Results achieved were consistently impressive, illustrating the effectiveness of 1:1 tuition on improving exam results. I specialise in raising self-esteem and building self-confidence. I work at all grade levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I became a full-time private tutor in 2015, because I wanted to offer my services to anyone one who wanted to benefit from them and it has been my long held ambition to be self-employed. When I tutor I try to establish trust and a working relationship from the outset. Young people enjoy working with me and I listen carefully to the needs of the student and the requests of parents and carers. I respond to individual needs as everyone is different. I enjoy explaining concepts to students and I am very patient. I build on the students’ school work and experience: every session is tailored to the individual. My tutorials are always relevant and constructive, and I endeavour to make them interesting and enjoyable. I still get excited about education and that moment when a student suddenly understands. The bottom line is that syllabus content has to be understood in order that the exams may be taken confidently and successfully.

The last three years have been fantastic! I have worked with the most interesting students and the most welcoming families. I work hard to engage with every individual and I take genuine delight in their progress and success. I have been surprised at how quickly students benefit from targeted 1:1 tuition in terms of self-confidence and not just the academic input. I still find Chemistry fascinating intellectually and I am pleased it is valued so highly by universities. My students have achieved at all levels – everyone is unique and I work with young people to help them achieve their potential. It is a privilege to work with the next generation. I have been particularly pleased that students I tutored in Y11 went on to study ‘A’ level Chemistry and my services were retained. Many of my clients have recommended me to their friends. Quite a few have gone on to study Chemistry at university! I value the positive feedback that people have given me. I really couldn’t wish for a more rewarding occupation.

My time-table is usually fairly full by the end of September each year, but gaps appear from time-to-time; so we might be lucky! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or if you think I might be able to help you. Please note that my sessions usually run over the hour – sometimes well over. I don`t watch the clock and I never leave a student in mid-problem!

I now work exclusively as a private tutor, providing 1:1 tuition. My preference is Chemistry, but if you think I could help your son/daughter in other ways, then I would be happy to discuss. My aim is to provide the very best private tutoring experience and this means supporting students at stressful exam times, when I make sure I am available 24/7.

I bring full documentation (CRB, identity, certificates, references, etc) on my first visit. I try very hard to do my best at all times for all my clients. Please read my feedback.
