Personal Description:

I grew up in Wiltshire and as a father of two, have a great passion for writing, teaching and learning, which is reflected in my career to date. After graduating from Winchester with a 2:1 in History and English, I completed a post-grad and have since worked as a tutor, professional coach, writer, corporate trainer, agent and actor.

I am a full current member of The Tutors` Association and specialise in 11+, GCSE English, Drama and History plus numeracy and literacy.

As a performed playwright and BBC scriptwriter, helping students to develop the style and structure of their writing is a particular specialism. I have had several plays produced on BBC Radio 4 and have written for `Doctors` (BBC1). Last year, my stage piece, THE RETURN OF THE SOLDIER was produced at Jermyn Street Theatre, London SW1 and received 4 star **** reviews from The Times and The Stage. A new work is due to premiere during October 2015. I am also currently undertaking work as a professional copywriter, a area for which I have an extensive portfolio.

Tutoring Experience:

I have recently tutored in GCSE English and GCSE Drama. Currently I tutor Primary Years 2-6 in numeracy and literacy on weekdays and 11+ on Saturday mornings.

I have over 20 years experience in the coaching and training sectors. I coach various communication skills to clients including The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, HM Treasury, FCO Services, HMGCC, HMRC and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. My work as a coach frequently involves one-to-one sessions with my delegates, in which I constantly seek effective and innovative new ways to fulfil their potential.

Before going freelance, I worked as a corporate trainer, devising and delivering courses all over the world for a leading ticketing and marketing software house. Again, much of the teaching was one-to-one and frequently involved boiling down complex and detailed subjects into intuitive, practical and example-led content, according to the level and learning preferences of the client.

As an ex-actor, I also coach in audition technique as well as helping actors to select and develop their audition speeches.

Tutoring Approach:

Calling on my rich experience as trainer and writer (and father!), I aim to offer a patient, practical and meticulous path to learning - building confidence by inspiring my students to enjoy their work and most importantly, to succeed at exam time.

I believe that a key element in effective tutoring is discovering ways in which your teaching can really 'land' and settle in the long-term memory. This is predicated on finding out how a student wants to learn, rather than simply what they need to be taught.
