Hi! I'm an American musician and musicologist, recently moved to the UK after marrying an Englishman (who's a maths and physics tutor on this website!). I'm currently writing up my PhD thesis in musicology, with a focus on the history of music technology.
I've played flute since primary school in different settings including orchestra, chamber ensemble, marching band, and improvisational and experimental music groups.
I've done classroom teaching and individual tuition in some varied settings: with preschool and grade 1 children, young adults with learning difficulties, adult learners, university students, and autistic children. My most extensive experience is in tutoring university students in music theory and history, and giving private flute lessons. My classroom lecturing experience has been in Western music history: music from the Middle Ages to the 1980s.
In lessons I like to start with the music students like. Everyone has a favorite song they'd like to learn to play. While I work with some great lesson books I've found, I also emphasize improvisation and learning to play by ear, developing musicality both on and off the page.
In all kinds of teaching I'm committed to respecting students and what they know, regardless of their age or ability level. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I help students to move forward by building on what they already know (which is always more than they think they know!).
