Personal Description:

I'm a glass half full kind of guy and am lucky enough to be working in the whisky industry in Speyside as a chemical engineer. I have been a whisky enthusiast for 6 years now so when I was offered a job where I had to visit the distilleries I was delighted!

I tutor maths, physics and chemistry to keep my school level science and maths on point for work and because I enjoy engaging with my pupils: this stems from helping my little sister with her homework and studies for any upcoming exams when I was younger and it is something that I have continued ever since.

Tutoring Experience:

02/05/11 – Present: Private Tutor in Maths, Physics and Chemistry with Tutor Doctor, Blue Tutors and Privately
I have been tutoring maths, physics and chemistry privately for 4 years during which I have had the privilege of tutoring a wide variety of students: I had one very bright pupil gain acceptance into Harvard University to study Economics during my tuition of further maths A-level with him; while another had been struggling with maths for years such that my tuition started at a very basic level and with his goal of passing his GCSE maths. The sessions I offer are a mix of weekly sessions that last all year as well and sessions for intensive exam preparation that only lasts a few weeks. I have tutored GCSE, AS Level, A-Level and SQA Higher

24/06/11 – 08/07/11: Maths Teaching Assistant at Paddington Academy

I have also completed the Student Award Scheme (SAS) in Paddington Academy, London, where I worked as a Maths and Science teaching assistant. Paddington Academy is a school for pupils with English as a second language; this presented many difficulties such as communication and cultural clashes in addition to the usual challenges of teaching… I was teaching pupils with a large range of capabilities and ages (11 – 18) and had to work with many pupils on a one-to-one basis, as they were either badly behaved or struggling academically. Towards the end of my placement I organised and hosted a year 10 Maths class with the help of the teacher. I helped the senior students with their university applications and gave presentations about university life and student finance.

01/07/08 – 02/08/08: Volunteer Aid Worker for Round Square International Service Project

I spent one month in India helping to manually build a dormitory for a local school. Whilst out there I volunteered as a teaching assistant in the local school where I taught maths and science classes. I was holding my own lessons and teaching pupils from age 5 to 14: In addition to as maths and science I would help the pupils practice their English.

Tutoring Approach:

I think that the 3 main qualities that I have when tutoring are that I provide a well structured, goal orientated set of tutoring sessions that is tailored to each pupil depending on what they want to achieve from the tuition; I am good at teaching my pupils how to solve the problems that they are struggling with and broader problem solving techniques that can be applied to other similar areas of academic study; and that I am good at explaining concepts in an understandable and memorable way.

I encourage my pupils to tackle the problems that they cannot solve head on by setting questions I feel will challenge them and then will give hints that will lead them in the right direction. I let them exhaust the approaches that they are using when trying to solve the problem, even if the lead they are following is incorrect. Once they are stuck I then engage in a discussion with my student as to where they think they were on the right lines and where they think that they were making mistakes to see if they can then crack the problem. I then get them to write notes on the problem; where they became stuck, and what they needed to do to solve it.

When I’m tutoring I explain concepts by using examples where the maths is used in day-to-day life that my pupils will recognise and I also use metaphors. When I’m explaining concepts I use the most simple language possible and break down the concept into it’s most simple terms, without over-simplifying it.
