I am a passionate, professional mathematics and science tutor, with over 1000 hours tutoring experience; covering primarily GCSE and A-Levels. I am a graduate from Maynooth University with a 1st Class Honours BSc Science (Single Honours) degree in Chemistry, plus a substantial amount of learning in Applied Mathematics & Statistics, Biology and Experimental Physics. I was a recipient of 2 academic awards from my university; the Rev. Michael Casey Prize (best examination grades in 3rd year chemistry of my undergraduate degree) and the Kathleen Lonsdale Prize (best single honours chemistry degree results).
Throughout my degree, I studied one year of experimental physics, 2 years of biology, 3 years of applied mathematics and all 4 years studying chemistry. In my final year, I also worked for the mathematics and statistics department as a computing lab demonstrator supervising and aiding students through their maths lab quizzes which went towards their final grade. These quizzes involved software such as Maple and MiniTab. I also ran a maths helpdesk for the quizzes where students would come for one-on-one help.
I am currently teaching A-Level: Chemistry (OCR A), Biology (OCR A), Physics (OCR A), & Mathematics (AQA Core Maths & Statistics), and GCSE: Edexcel (9-1) Biology, Chemistry & Physics.
I have over 1000 tutoring hours done, giving 1:1 tuition to students, both GCSE and A-Level. The exam board I am most familiar with is OCR, especially the new OCR A taken at AS & A-Level, but I have experience tutoring AQA and Edexcel too. I have given lessons to students of all backgrounds and capabilities, Higher and Foundation, helping students achieve and realise their potential. My students have gone from U grades to passing, and from C/D to A*/A.
I have received excellent feedback: Personable, Flexible, Willingness to Help, Professional, Friendly, Good Communicator.
I am highly passionate about science and mathematics, and I feel like I have made previous students more passionate and enthusiastic about science and mathematics throughout my tutoring experience.
Firstly, my approach is all down to the individual student. Everybody learns differently, and I am highly adaptable in my approach to tutoring.
My main goal is give the student a full sense of understanding the material, by first explaining the content in simple terms, and then to build from there. I never just bombard a student with information; I always make sure they understand the content.
My approach is to go through the section and/or chapter that the student is currently doing in class using digital resources on my computer, and then to follow this up with a lesson of answering questions to test the students ability to apply their knowledge and to aid in preparation for exams.
Where applicable, I like the use of visuals. For example, using the whiteboard or using a molecular model kit to build molecules in the learning of "The Shapes of Molecules".
