Personal Description:

I'm a Scottish-Chinese student who grew up in Macau, S.A.R. Because of this, I am fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Portuguese (I also achieved an A grade in my Higher Spanish course) and can read and write both traditional and simplified Chinese script. I am going into my final year at the University of Edinburgh, where I am doing a Philosophy MA degree, with interests in metaphysics, epistemology, and eastern philosophy. I was a straight A student at James Gillespies High School, one of the leading state schools in Scotland and the UK, and maintain a comfortable 2:1 average at university, with many of my course marks being first class. I am very interested in languages and recently began learning Russian.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored sporadically since I was in my second last year of school, and have helped non-English speaking students achieve pass marks for international and anglophone school entry exams. I have also tutored Mandarin previously and understand acutely the challenges faced by beginners, such as tonality and character stroke order.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm a pretty easygoing guy and I think that there's no reason why learning can't be fun. For example, I will happily throw in a bit of trivia about a thinker that we're studying in order to make him/her more interesting, or explain the evolution of the first Chinese pictograms into the characters that we use today. Although it's a bit of an overused word, I would describe myself as passionate about languages and philosophy, and so I have a fair amount of background knowledge concerning both subjects. I enjoy seeing the connections between various disciplines, and I think it makes for better memorisation/internalisation if you can gain a deeper understanding of what you are studying.
