I graduated from the University of Leicester with a bachelors degree in medical biochemistry in 2013 and progressed to work in a cancer genetics lab at Cardiff University for two years following my graduation. I am currently a PhD student working within the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, my project is based on cancer biology. I have always had an interest in science and I'm enthusiastic about sharing that interest with others. I am able to cover many aspects of human biology including genetics, pharmacology, biochemistry and physiology.
During my time at Cardiff University I have had numerous opportunities to share my knowledge and experience with other students. For the last two years I have taken part in an initiative with 1st year medical students where I have been able to teach them the basics of cancer biology through a series of tutorials and prepare interactive lab sessions for the students to take part in. Working at a university means there is a quick turnaround of students within the lab environment, I have been regularly involved with training students in various lab techniques and helping them get up-to speed with the knowledge they need to succeed with their projects.
I set high standards for myself as a tutor and I'm enthusiastic about inspiring my students to learn, understand and appreciate their subject of interest. Tutoring is of course a more personal form of teaching and I am able to cater to individual students needs to help them achieve their goals. This is why I feel it is important to discuss the students goals prior to the tutorials in order for them to get the best out of the sessions. Again, I am also able to cater my teaching style to individual students in order to enable them to enjoy the work and improve their understanding. I am able to prepare interactive or lecture-style sessions depending on what the student prefers, whether it be in the form of Powerpoint slides or going through exam questions from past papers.
