Personal Description:

I am an open-minded, approachable and reliable doctoral student, who loves to teach and who has a passion for all things cultural.

I have a BA in English Literature, graduating with a First and an award for the highest ranked Literature student that year. I then continued my education with a fully funded MA in History of Art at University College London, graduating with a distinction. I then spent the next three years working in the cultural section – from stints at the Royal Academy Magazine and Tate Etc. to the V&A, literary festivals and most recently as Public Programme Manager for the Design Museum. In October 2014 I began my PhD at UCL focusing on outdoor sculpture in 16th century Italy, for which I was also awarded full funding.

I can teach art history, literature, critical thinking, history, and museum studies, as well as practical essay skills and personal statements for university entry.

Tutoring Experience:

Teaching is an integral part of my doctoral degree, but I also have teaching experience from other aspects of my work experience.

Working in museum education, I have given tours and talks to school groups and adults, I have presented lectures at conferences, and have led sessions for undergraduate and MA students. I have also worked as a literary tutor for the charity ‘Ministry of Stories’ working with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities, and have worked for the London Schools Arts Service, where I developed creative projects with teachers.

As part of my doctoral degree I teach Art History to undergraduates, including gallery based sessions. I love to teach and to tutor – to get to know a student and help them make the most of their learning and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe a good teacher is someone who is a clear communicator, who is able to create a supportive, welcoming and challenging environment, where students feel able to test out their ideas, ask questions, and actively participate in learning.

As a teacher I am enthusiastic, caring and flexible to a students needs and interests. I focus on making a subject relevant and engaging, and am committed to widening the cultural horizons, confidence and intellectual ability of my students.

The initial meeting will be used to discuss aims and requirements for the student, before a series of sessions will be devised to meet these needs. Personal experience has taught me the importance of discussion as one of the most effective ways to impart and build knowledge, as well as the efficiency of object based learning. Where desired, sessions in galleries, museums or libraries can be organized to encourage interaction and enthusiasm with the subject.
