Terry offers a FREE first / introductory lesson!
Weekly, 1-to-1 maths lessons at key stage 3 (secondary) and GCSE foundation and higher, years 7 to 11, ages 11 to 16, for students who have lost confidence, are falling behind in class, need to improve their grades or want to get into a higher set.
The key to getting good test results or exam grades is mastering the art of problem-solving. It’s a critical skill every maths student must learn. This is why my lessons are questions-based. Together we answer questions and solve problems. And if the student doesn’t understand the methods, rules and equations, we go back and learn them, using the best revision guides, workbooks and exam practice guides.
I use CGP revision guides and workbooks. They are well-written, concise, closely follow the National Curriculum, are always up-to-date with DfE (Department for Education) curriculum changes (which happens often), are easy and inexpensive to get from Amazon and are used by many schools as reference books.
If the student is a quick study, problem-solving can be mastered in a term, but for best results it normally takes an academic year. Most parents want me to cover the whole curriculum - there can be a surprising number of knowledge gaps - but any lesson can be customised at any time. We can go over school homework, class topics not understood or prepare for an upcoming test, working from a topic list.
I normally set homework at the end of each lesson and mark it with the student at the beginning of the next one. The student gets valuable practice and I get to see if they have understood the topic. Closer to exams we work together on past papers where we both answer questions and compare answers with the official marking scheme.
I have worked as a private maths tutor for 4 years, helping many students at key stage 3 and GCSE to get better marks in tests and exams, in and around Stevenage.
I studied maths to degree level at Brunel University where I graduated with a BSc in engineering. Of the final year exams, I scored higher than 90% in my maths paper.
I designed and ran 5-day technology training courses for small groups, for over 5 years, as a training instructor working for Cable & Wireless. I also ran 1-to-1 training sessions on PC software for clients as a self-employed technical trainer.
I have good communications skills and have the ability to explain complex or difficult topics in a clear and easy to understand way. I am a good listener, which is important with 1-to-1 tuition. I am friendly and patient but also organised and professional.
I am BDS checked and the certificate is available for inspection. I can teach in your home or mine. If I travel to your home I charge an additional £5 to cover my costs.
So a typical lesson would start with marking last week’s homework, deciding on the topic to cover for this lesson (which could be a continuation of the curriculum), then together we answer questions and solve problems, finally, I set homework based on the topics covered during the lesson. The student takes away all workings out. Copious workings out are the biggest contributor to good test and exam grades.
If the student is with me for an academic year, we will have covered most or all of the topics in the curriculum, answered lots of questions, solved many maths problems and they will be a lot more confident of getting good test or exam grades.
