I received my PhD from the University of Oxford three years ago and now work in scientific research. My original degree is in Mathematics and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and communicating the subject to others in a clear and concise way.
Whilst completing my PhD I tutored maths to earth sciences undergraduates in groups of 2-4. I have also tutored maths at both GCSE and A Level standard during the holidays of my undergraduate degree.
I am flexible in my approach to tutoring, depending on the student, and am both patient and encouraging. I believe that maths becomes a lot easier when it is based on a solid understanding of the principles behind it. Whilst at schools students can often be encouraged to simply learn the methods; most students will find tackling problems a lot easier if they understand where the methods come from.
For the sake of exams it is also important to spend time focusing on past papers and so I would go through a lot of these with any student when it comes close to exam time.
