I am a 34 year old mother of one ,reading for an Open University Degree in french and Spanish . I am currently in my final year at the Advanced level. I also have a first degree in Business administration from the University of Guyana ,South America. I come from a family of teachers and I also aspire to be a teacher one day.
My first language is English but I have spent over 21 years learning and speaking spanish . I had a very rich and varied childhood spent in many different countries, hence my love for languages. I am very confident and love working with children and stimulating their young minds . Spanish has been a childhood passion. Hence, I have extensive aspirations to teach this beautiful language .
I have worked as a Spanish teacher in South America for approximately three years where I taught children whose age range from 5 to 17. I have been employed on a full time basis for the past 6 years and tutor part time.
I tutor kids aged 5 to 11 and students preparing for GCSE and A level . I also tutor adults or anyone looking to acquire Spanish speaking skills or even to brush up on their already existing Spanish skills.
With a foreign language, it is important to remember what you have been taught. Therefore, repetition is very important to me and I ensure that this is included and developed in my teaching strategy. I work on the four components of language learning; listening , reading , writing and speaking and use a wide range of exercises to develop students' confidence. Sometimes I use the media in the form of tapes, CDs , DVDs , films( for older students) , songs, etc to make the language fun.
For new students, I first give a core lesson, which is followed up by numerous practice exercises and homework to ensure that the lesson is fully understood. From time to time, I revert to core lessons and give mini tests to ensure that students are on top of their learning.
For GCSE and A level students, I tailor learning according to their needs with lots of emphasis on working and understanding past papers and answers. I first have a chat with the student to find out where he/ she is at their stage of learning, what are their weak points and which points need more work. I then develop a learning program to strengthen their skills and to inject confidence and accuracy into their weak language areas.
