I am passionate about literature and writing and have loved books ever since I was a small child.I loved books so much my teenage Saturday job was in a library and I always wanted to be a English lecturer but a career in the city and money lured me down a different path. I have studied English to degree level, and was in the top five high scoring students in my year. Roehampton Institute is famed for its English Department (in the top 20 in the UK) and I was tutored by Simon Edwards and Dr Martin Priestman.
My career before my children was in the world of Human Resources, which I enjoyed very much. Since volunteering to help a pupil four years ago with their GCSE's and A-levels, I have realised that this is the right vocation for me. Shakespeare, Hardy, Dickens, Trollope and Victorian literature generally are my areas of specialist interest and I enjoy exploring the themes in the text and trying to infuse my literature passion into my pupils.
I have been tutoring for five years. My GCSE students in Summer 2017 achieved grades of 8 and 9, and in previous years others received A* grades. My English A -level 2017 Literature students have achieved grades A and B.
Most of the time my students have been predicted a C grade or 5 for GCSE or below, hence the need for a tutor to get their grades up. I am immensely proud of all of the students I have tutored because they have worked so hard, and gained much higher results then they had thought was possible. No-one has got less than a B grade. All of my students have gone up by a minimum of two grades, or more in some cases.
I offer tutoring in 2 hour slots every other week to new students because this is more effective than 1 hour slots weekly, especially when Language and Literature both need to be covered. This has worked for all of my students and it is the way I like to work.
My philosophy is to understand what the pupil feels they need support with and work from there upwards. I want my students to write at a higher level than the course dictates, and to be able to attain the highest grade possible because ultimately this is what it is all about. In terms of assignments I will make sure I am prepared for each session by knowing the book/poetry that is being analysed and allowing them to guide me through their ideas and intrepretations, whilst discussing common themes and ideas to explore and write about. I will make sure the students' grammar and use of punctuation is correct, and that literary sources of information are referenced properly, and that the structure of an assignment flows.
