Personal Description:

I'm a slightly older (!) PhD student - 36 years to be exact - and I lead an active life with many interests ranging from running, cycling and hiking, to reading and baking. I'm pretty easy going and like making people laugh - even if sometimes it is at me, rather than with me! Prior to starting my Phd at St Andrews, I studied in Oban for a degree in marine science, and completed my first degree in politics at the University of Sussex, so I've studied a wide range of subjects with a variety of styles and at different levels. I like to think I can relate to most people and I'm very outgoing and friendly.

Tutoring Experience:

I've taught and lectured during my undergraduate degree in marine science and during my PhD at St Andrews, helping undergraduates with subjects including chemistry, biology, earth science and statistics. When I was studying for A level French and German I also gave help to GCSE students in both subjects and acted as a classroom assistant for younger students.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to start by finding out what the tutee needs, what they want and what they expect from me and I do this by having a nice informal chat, and get to know them. I think it's really important to get to know each individual, because teaching is not a "one glove fits all" occupation. Once I know more about my student and what they need/want/expect, I like to involve them in how we're going to approach their learning. I truly believe learning is a shared experience, and whilst I'm the one with the knowledge and who will set the challenges and boundaries, they are the one working hard to learn and grow. I also like to make things fun where possible, and demonstrate difficult concepts with either fun games or simple analogies. Most of all, I try to make each lesson a shared and two-way experience - there needs to be dialogue in both directions.
