I am a Psychology tutor with seventeen years teaching and tutoring experience both at A Level and undergraduate level. Until 2014 I was Head of a busy Psychology Department at an International College in East Sussex where I worked for twelve years and more recently (2015-16) have taught at a local independent school. I have also worked as a Psychology A Level examiner for AQA and am therefore very familiar with what is required to do well in the exams. I have a degree in Developmental Psychology and a PhD in Clinical Psychopathology and I am a member of the British Psychological Society and a registered member of the Tutors Association appearing on the government register of approved tutors. I also have a current enhanced DBS certificate.
I currently only work as a Psychology tutor, I am a specialist in this field and because I am not teaching in school am able to completely devote my time and energy to my tutees. I have extensive experience of enabling my students to achieve to the best of their ability, and am happy to spend as much time as a student needs making sure that they understand a topic fully and know how to answer exam style questions in an appropriate manner to achieve the very best grade possible for them. I am also available to support students who have not received the grades that they hoped for, either in mock exams or in the new syllabus AS or A level exams. If you need to retake, or just want to go over your paper so that you can see how you could have improved your responses, I can help. If you have just taken mock exams at the end of the first year of study for the new syllabus A Level and need support for your second year studies I will be very happy to help you to prepare for the new A Level exam.
I have worked with students from many different nationalities and age groups and with diverse educational needs, and therefore am used to explaining clearly and making information as accessible as possible. I can help with essay writing and revision techniques as well as making sure that short answer questions are structured in order to access maximum marks.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring Psychology very much and bring a lot of enthusiasm for the subject to my lessons.
I have seventeen years experience of teaching Psychology at A Level on a range of specifications (AQA A, AQA B, new AQA, OCR, Edexcel) and three years experience of undergraduate teaching at University; however PLEASE NOTE that I am currently only available to teach the AQA psychology specification I am not working with students covering any other exam board. I have also had wide experience of one-to-one private tuition with many students over the past five years, covering a wide range of different needs (including: A Level retakes, preparation for mock exams, general Psychology tuition, access courses, university preparation, UCAS form completion).
I am very experienced at teaching Psychology generally, explaining the material and helping students to get to grips with the subject and the particular topics they need to learn from the specification. This includes helping with retakes where practicing past papers and clarifying how to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the specification is critical. I also have a great deal of experience in supporting students through the last stages of their studies just before the exams, where consolidation of their learning is vital and revision needs to be in hand. I have many resources to assist students in undertaking both learning and revision in the most time efficient manner and to ensure that they are fully prepared for the demands of both AS and A2 exams. Resources include power points, hand outs, worksheets, sample questions, past papers, mark schemes and so on.
I have experience of supporting students who need to refresh their knowledge of Psychology or who might need a confidence booster or help with writing essays and preparing for presentations or assignments. I also have worked with students on access courses that include psychology or psychopathology modules. I can also help if you need assistance with preparing power point presentations and with practicing presentation skills, including managing the stress many people experience when giving a presentation.
I have worked extensively with students of different nationalities and from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, as such I am happy to work with students who do not have English as their first language, however in this case an IELTS score of 5.5 minimum would be expected for a student hoping to achieve a high grade for A Level Psychology.
Every student has their own personal learning style, and educational requirements that may differ from other people, as such I ensure that my teaching is tailored carefully to each student using a systematic and structured approach. I will take time to get to know each student and will listen carefully to what they hope to achieve from working with me. I will be happy to build a personal learning plan with each student to ensure that they are happy with the way we are approaching their learning and to ensure that their progress proceeds as anticipated.
N.B. My hourly fee includes all of the following: one hour of dedicated tuition time, travel to and from a student's home, email communication between tutoring sessions, provision of handouts, revision materials, worksheets and extra reading, preparation of appropriate lessons which may include power point presentations, and provision of specifications, past papers and mark schemes where required. I am also very happy to spend time discussing progress with students and/or parents outside of the tuition hour, and will email parents with an update if they are not available at the lesson to talk to.
