Personal Description:

I have thirty years experience working in science as an industrial and research scientist, teacher and tutor. I love teaching and helping students to achieve their goals. I have an interest in environment issues and believe in the potential of science to address these and other global development issues. This has always motivated me and is one factor which can help engage pupils with science.

Tutoring Experience:

I’ve always enjoyed teaching science. I first did so as a research scientist, but then I re-trained as a science teacher and have since enjoyed teaching in a wide variety of schools; international, state and independent. I have experience of teaching the full range of abilities including high achievers, students with special needs and those for whom English is a second language. I’ve also spent several years as a one to one tutor in a primary school, an experience which deepened my understanding of how to adapt material to a pupil’s individual’s learning needs.

I have worked as a tutor alongside teaching and bringing up my own children for 20 years. I have valued meeting a diverse range of students and helping to meet their individual needs. A number have come with poor predicted grades, yet went onto achieve highly in their exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and professional. I arrange a free first meeting so that we can get to know more about each other and discuss your needs, around which I plan your sessions. I focus initially on ensuring that you understand the science as I believe that once this is in place, learning the content and skills you need for exams and novel questions falls readily into place.

Science is fascinating; I want you to enjoy your sessions and make links and develop skills which help improve all your academic work. Tuition gives the perfect opportunity to get to grips with a subject, resolve problems, enhance strengths and maybe spark lifelong interests.
