I am a Cambridge graduate and an experienced teacher who has recently moved to Beverley in East Yorkshire. As the mother of four grown-up children, I have recent experience of schools from both a teacher's and a parent's point of view, and from hearing the views of my own children. I love teaching English; one of my greatest joys is sharing the delights of English Literature with my students. I'm a keen film-watcher, theatre-goer and dog-walker; my house is full of books and I will never have read everything that I want to!
I qualified as a teacher of English and Drama in Surrey in 1985. When I left the school four years later, because my husband's work relocated, I was Head of the English Department. I did not immediately seek another teaching job as we were not based in one place for any length of time, but between 1989 and 1992 I taught a weekly adult Return to Learn Creative Writing course at Ruskin College, Oxford, and taught Religious Studies at a private school in Oxford. During my children's pre-school years I taught the teenagers' group at our local church and ran a Drama Club in the local primary school.
I had intended to return to teaching when my youngest child started at school, but at that point my eldest son was struggling and I ended up home educating him for five years up to GCSE. This has given me considerable experience of one-to-one work, and a flexible approach to the way students learn.
More recently, I tutored individual students on the old GCSE C/D borderline for one Cambridgeshire school and have held a permanent part-time post at another since 2009. During this time I have taught all ages from Year 7 to Year 13. I am particularly familiar with the English Language GCSEs from Edexcel and AQA and with the Cambridge iGCSE. This summer I will be marking the GCSE English Literature paper for AQA. I am an A-rated examiner for the old AQA English Literature A Level specification and for the new OCR English Literature A Level.
I have tutored a number of students in one-to-one sessions through the school, particularly supporting individuals through public exams.
I am fully qualified and confident in teaching English Language and Literature up to GCSE level. At A Level, my expertise is in English Literature, so I do not offer tuition in the English Language A Level.
I believe strongly that education needs to be suited to the needs of an individual; as a tutor I will work hard to find the approach that works best for each individual student. We learn best when we enjoy what we are doing; I will aim to make each session stimulating and varied as well as useful. Having worked as an A Level examiner for the last 8 years, I understand the demands of public examinations and am well-placed to help build students' confidence as they prepare for them. Above all, my students tell me that they appreciate my passion for the subject. I will aim to share that passion with every student I tutor.
