I have over 15 years experience of working as a teacher in further education. My first degree is in Biology and then I achieved a PhD in Microbiology. I am a friendly, patient person and enjoy teaching those who want to learn. I am based in West Runton.
During my time teaching in further education, I have worked with large groups, small groups and 1:1 with individual students, ranging in ages from 14 to about 75. Many of these students have had barriers to learning, such as bad experiences at school, and I have had great satisfaction in helping them to make progress and achieve their aims. Some students have had physical or learning disabilities but by adapting resources and being flexible in my approach, they have also achieved success. In more recent times, I have worked with students for whom English is not their first language. For the last two years, I have been tutoring students in years 10 to 13 in GCSE Maths and Science and in A level Biology and Chemistry. I have also tutored students on Access courses who need extra help to gain entry to their chosen degree course. The new science A levels require a higher level of Mathematics than previously and I am able to support individual students or small groups in this area.
I like to first identify what you want to get out of the tutoring and what your previous experience of the subject has been. I then agree with you what our short term and long term targets should be and how we are going to achieve them. I am an organised tutor but also very human - I like to be supportive, praising success and encouraging all the time, whilst pointing out areas that could be improved. I keep records of what is done each week so that we can look back on progress over time.
