As a qualified school teacher I understand the pressures and dynamics of the modern classroom. As a parent I also understand the priorities and anxieties of my students and their families. I enjoy building a warm and constructive working relationship with each of my students based on encouragement and praise, building their confidence by carefully selecting teaching materials to enhance their skills. A lack of confidence is common in students of Maths and I get enormous satisfaction in seeing the improvement in my students' abilities and willingness to tackle new problems as their confidence grows.
I have taught in a number of secondary schools and have tutored many students of different ages and abilities. I am currently working in a local school giving small **Contact Detail Removed** to prepare students for the new much harder GCSE curriculum in Maths and I am also employed by Edexcel as an examiner for Maths GCSE. My knowledge of the school curriculum and the detailed requirements of the exam boards means I can address weaknesses in student's skills which I know will help them greatly as they progress towards GCSE. My students enjoy the opportunity to ask questions and go over a topic away from the competitive and distracting atmosphere in the classroom at school, and to discuss the realities of school life with a tutor who understands how modern schools work.
At our initial meeting I talk to the student to start to understand their attitudes and abilities and their particular anxieties. I ask them about their Maths experience in school and about how they have found any other tutoring they have received. I assess the student's learning style so that I can select and design activities which will particularly effective and enjoyable. Students also carry out an activity to identify the topics on which they feel they need the most help. This enables me to build the programme for the second part of our tutorials. We spend the first part of each tutorial reviewing the topics covered at school since our last meeting and any issues with school homework, and them move on to the topics on the 'shopping list' that we have identified together.
