This is how a referee rated Stuart:
I am a 22 year old graduate from the University of Edinburgh with fresh knowledge of the Scottish education system. I am well versed in a variety of literature and genres, and can offer expertise on both the construction of writing essays, close reading and creative writing.
I have over 3 experience as a journalist for several reputable outlets including Broadway Baby, ThreeWeeks, The Scotsman and the University of Edinburgh Press.
My previous experience of teaching includes helping several higher English classes whilst in my sixth year at high school. I worked in helping individuals who needed expertise on their course work by giving one-to-one help in class, co-ordinating their assigned literature and ensuring that they kept up to speed with class work.
Between then and now I have supplied my skills that I have learned from university to privately tutor from between 2013-2015.
Before I can begin to help someone, I first need to know what literature they are studying. The first session is always an hour long and the cost is cheaper, simply because it gives both teacher and student the chance to get a grounding of what we need to cover.
For tutoring people I find it is easier for the student to offer their own analysis first and then we can work on the strengths and weaknesses of their interpretations. I always try to stay on the same level as the student instead of simply talking down to them - knowing that your own analysis is appreciated is key in English, though where necessary I will help to point out where there are flaws.
I will cover the most basic of English terminology for students and I use this as homework for them remember and revise. It is crucial for students in Standard Grade and Higher English to learn what 'metaphor' and 'simile' mean, but it is also important to learn the wider terminology which crop up time and time again. To understand these will give students an edge in the exams.
On top of this, I also aim to provide a critical understanding of how to analyse close reading, recognise themes and their relevant significance in literature, improve upon spelling, and help students write critical essays as a means of evaluation and interpretation.
