Government and Politics
Highly motivated and enthusiastic tutor with over six years' experience, teaching students from GCSE to University level.
I hold a PhD in Political History from UCL, specialising in the politics of the early eighteenth century. I have always enjoyed tutoring and am looking forward to continue to use my knowledge and experience to help students to achieve their potential.
I enjoy talking about my subject and like nothing better than sharing ideas with others. I have a wide knowledge of history, my first degree being in Modern History and Politics, then specialising for my Masters in the Early Modern period (1485 - 1760).
I have also studied politics in some depth and have in the past served on a Town council as a Councillor as well as chairman of several committees. This experience means I am up to date with both local and national political issues. Additionally I have worked closely with a Parliamentary candidate to get a feel for the workings of modern government.
I currently work as a tutor at Oxford University, teaching courses to the general public as part of the continuing education department as well as postgraduate and masters units.
I have had experience helping out in a local grammar school where I first picked up my love of teaching.
From the 2010-2011 period I was able to gain a good deal of experience tutoring privately within my local area, coaching for GCSE's and A levels in History and Politics. This brought me into contact with a range of subjects, from 20th Century China and the Reign of Henry VII to the Politics of the USA.
During the period 2011-2013 I was given the opportunity to teach a course at UCL, tutoring students in the political, economic and social history of Britain 1688-1860. This involved not only conveying and discussing information in class, but dealing with the pastoral side, helping students with essays and wider academic problems.
As of September 2014 I am also an approved Examiner for OCR, marking a range of A level examinations.
My approach is to try and ascertain what a student’s strengths and weaknesses are in their work and then to encourage them to maximise their potential. Discussing ideas and working with textbooks, sources and other material is key. All sessions will be tailor made to suit the individual student’s particular concerns whether it is a problem with a specific module, exam or coursework technique.
