I am a full-time professional maths tutor helping pupils with primary (KS1-KS2), secondary (KS3) and GCSE maths. I also offer specialist tuition for the QTS numeracy skills test.
I tutor from a studio in Disley, where pupils visit me from nearby villages such as High Lane, Hazel Grove, Poynton, Marple, Whaley Bridge, New Mills, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Hayfield.
I have a 100% success rate in helping pupils to pass GCSE maths. I am always able to bring about an improvement in maths and this can often be achieved by helping them with some of the basic fundamentals such as numeracy, fractions, percentages, and geometry for instance. This then gives my pupils a boost in confidence enabling them to progress to a more advanced level at school.
I also tutor online to pupils nationally and internationally.
I have a friendly and informal approach to tutoring where students can learn in a relaxed and no pressure environment.
I have tutored maths for 20+ years across all levels and have a friendly and approachable manner. I adapt the lessons to each individual pupil according to their learning styles and needs.
I have a first class degree and PhD from the University of Manchester (1995 & 1998), both of which are essentially the application of advanced mathematics and physics.
I have been an Associate member of the Centre of Excellence in Teaching & Learning for promoting learner autonomy and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I hold teaching qualifications and an enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) certificate.
I have been tutoring mathematics privately for around 20 years from primary to GCSE level for all ages from 7 upwards.
I spent 7 years as a Senior Lecturer within a university setting teaching mathematically focussed subjects. In this post, I gained considerable experience working with students that required additional help with their maths, and this became an area in which I later began to focus on and become a specialist in.
More recently, I left my academic post in favour of tutoring and now offer tuition on a full time and professional basis, as this is the area that I enjoy most, and is where I know I can make the greatest impact on student performance.
I have also been a tutor with the Open University working with adult learners, where again I helped those struggling with maths.
I was an Associate of the Centre of Excellence in Teaching & Learning for several years where I was involved in researching and implementing improvements to teaching and assessment practice. I have also developed several courses for university level education.
I have produced, marked and moderated hundreds of exams.
I offer a friendly, relaxed and informal approach to tutoring. I tailor the material to each individual pupil working at a pace to suit their requirements. It is a no pressure environment where students can grow in confidence and ability.
I am able to explain the often abstract concepts of mathematics in ways which my pupils often find easier to understand. I avoid using technical jargon and explain everything in easy to understand every day language.
I often find it is useful to start by helping my pupils to master the fundamental aspects of a topic (such as fractions, percentages etc). This helps the pupil to grow in confidence which allows us to then move on top the more advanced topics.
