I am a 27 year old research scientist who graduated in 2014 with a PhD from the University of Glasgow. I am really enthusiastic about my subject area and I am passionate about helping others achieve a better understanding of biology. I currently work as a post doctoral researcher at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and as such, I am kept up to date with recent findings in the field. I have a proven track record of significantly improving my students grades - see feedback. Most importantly, and what my previous tutees will testify to - I try an make learning fun!
For the past 5 years I have tutored students at Intermediate 2, Standard Grade and Higher level, all of whom have seen a great improvement in their results during internal assessments and NABs and in their end of course examinations. More recently I have tutored students in national 5 and have kept abreast with the updates to the new coursework and syllabus.
I have tutored 3rd year Immunology students as well as medical and dental students at the University of Glasgow. I help these students with both practical laboratory based work and also with the theory aspect.
Firstly it is important to state that all students have different capabilities and needs. I am here to be both supportive and encouraging. I find it best for the student to identify key areas of the course they find difficult so as we can work to improve these as most often this is what students tend to avoid, instead focusing more on their stronger aspects. I find it useful for the student to at least attempt the question and then we can discuss where they have gone wrong.Towards exam time I also prefer my students to focus on past paper type questions and would encourage them to do as many past papers as possible and then we can go over them. I am very willing to offer any tips and ideas of how to best manage time and resources during and leading up to exams. Most of all i want my student to be at ease and create an environment where they are comfortable asking questions as in my experience this helps to build their confidence and exam performance. I am passionate about biology, immunology and scientific research in general, and this is something I try to instil in students who proclaim that biology is "their worst subject". Something I have identified over the past 5 years is generally the students who identify a weakness and seek tutoring early tend to improve upon their grade than those who leave it to a few weeks before the exam.
