My name is Steve, I'm a 33 year old Biology teacher, specialising in teaching A levels and level 3 BTEC nationals. I have a first class honours degree, and masters in stem cell technology, both from a Russell Group University. I can offer tutoring sessions to students looking for help with their studies, revision and exam prep. I can help all abilities, whether you are struggling with a particular topic, or are looking to push your learning on further and challenge your self. I am ideally looking to tutor A2 students studying OCR F214/ F215/ F216 modules, however will consider other exam boards/ qualifications as long as it is level 3 and above.
I learnt to teach at the worlds number 1 teacher training university, The Institute of Education UCL. I have been working for the last 3 years at a sixth-form college, where entry requirements are low, and the value added and results are high. I specialise in KS5 biology, with OCR being my main base of experience. I have experience of working with students going through UCAS, including those applying for medicine, pharmacy and other NHS related courses, as well as your more typical biology, biomedical, and biochemistry degrees. I am also experienced in creating, delivering and assessing BTEC level 3 Applied Science, so can offer help with this also.
I will only consider tutoring 1-2-1, and put an emphasis on the tutee being actively involved in the discussion around a topic. Why? Academic education research demonstrates that knowledge has a greater retention rate if the learner is actively involved in the process, rather than passively listening. Obviously the amount of explaining by the tutee will depend on their understanding of a subject, however you need to share what you think you know in order to clarify any misconceptions. Conversely other topics you will have a greater understanding, and will wish to focus on taking your understanding further through specific questions you may have, or advice on how to challenge your self further.
