Personal Description:

I am an experienced teacher of English Language and Literature at Key Stage 3 and GCSE and English Literature, Film Studies and Media Studies at A level. I have taught in secondary schools and sixth form colleges in Hampshire since 2003 and I have an excellent understanding of the requirements of each of the examination boards. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a local journalist and BBC producer for ten years so have broad experience outside of teaching. I pride myself on being able to build effective relationships with young people and I am committed to helping teenagers reach their full potential.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 12 years experience of delivering English, Film and Media courses to 11-18 year olds. I have been head of Key Stage 3 English in an outstanding secondary school and specialise in helping students struggling with English GCSE to secure the C grade or above that is so important for progression to college or the world of work. I have taught A level English Literature, Film Studies and Media Studies throughout my career as a teacher and I currently work as a scrutineer, moderator and examiner for OCR. I also have a TEFL qualification and taught English as a foreign language in Spain following graduation from university.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring largely hasn't caught up with the 21st century and use a range of new technology tools to help tutees. Each tutee has an account for my own virtual learning environment on the Moodle platform. This features revision guides, quizzes, past papers, a forum and other resources to allow tutees to practise their skills and keep in touch if they have questions. I am happy to conduct online tutoring and regularly tutor students from across the country using a combination of Skype and Google Docs. This enables us to edit documents in real time and create revision resources for tutees.

It is essential to carry out an initial diagnostic meeting with each student to identify the areas they are seeking to improve. We will then develop an agreed strategy to build the appropriate skills. There are no easy fixes and students will be required to practise regularly and complete homework set via the VLE. My tutoring is never generalised - I focus specifically on the requirements of the board the student is studying and will use past papers to prepare individuals fully for the terminal exam(s).
