I have a passion for literature, and I am an avid reader of contemporary fiction with a particular interest in dystopian literature.
However, I do have interests outside of my subject area! I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes (although they do not always work) and I like watching films or going to the theatre. There is also nothing better than taking the dog for a walk on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
I am currently teaching at a secondary school in Hampshire. I have experience of teaching a variety of modules at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. I have a broad experience of working with a variety of ages, abilities and topics. I have high expectations of all my students and pitch my lessons accordingly. I have previously taught the OCR GCSE specification, and marked GCSE papers for this board. I am currently teaching the new AQA specification. I have tutoring experience for both the AQA and IGCSE specifications.
As a graduate of English, I have a passion for both literature and language. Alongside developing literacy and communication skills, English also promotes key transferable skills such as reading, writing and speaking and listening. These skills are vital to being articulate, to being able to debate and to being able to question the world. I believe that it is my responsibility as a teacher to ensure that my students are able to interrogate material critically. My aim is to help students access a variety texts from across different times, places and genres, I am able to create both stimulating and challenging lessons. I am passionate about encouraging reading for pleasure as well as engaging students with texts that facilitate personal interpretations. I also believe that we should cultivate students’ use of language so that they have the tools to be creative and innovative.
I have been praised for my organisational and planning skills, my subject knowledge, my enthusiasm, my extended questioning technique and the variety of tasks that I use. All of these aspects allow me to make English accessible to all, as well as making it engaging and enjoyable.
As a tutor, my aim is to complement classroom learning and to encourage further progression. I have a range of resources from my own teaching that would be available to students and I would also plan and resource engaging tutoring sessions based on the specific individual needs of the student.
