Personal Description:

I am a freelance translator, with an MA in Literary Translation obtained from Exeter University in 2008. I originally graduated in Spanish and German from Kent University in 2002 (during which time I spent a year living in both Germany and Spain), after which I travelled around Europe and worked for some time in London as a PA at the Chartered Institute of Linguists. I love anything to do with language(s) and would like to continue to my involvement in education.

Tutoring Experience:

In 2002 I spent one year teaching English in Spain (all levels to both children and adults), and for the next three years I worked as a Saturday morning Spanish teacher for children aged 5-11. During this time I also undertook voluntary work in primary schools, working with children with difficulties in literacy. Alongside my primary role as a translator, since 2006 I have also offered occasional private tuition in Spanish (at GCSE and beginner level), English as a Foreign Language, GCSE English (literature & language) and GCSE German. References are available upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

After the tutee lets me know what areas he/she would prefer to work on, I can prepare some relevant material and build on that: I have plenty of books, CDs, sheets and Internet material! I am keen to let pupils work at their own pace and not feel overloaded with information, although it is also important to feel challenged. Particularly for children's lessons, I would be using games and pictures. I aim for lessons to be relaxed yet productive, and above all try my best to ensure that pupils feel comfortable and encouraged, and not awkward about making mistakes.
