As a teacher of English, I have taught in a variety of different schools since qualifying. My degree is in both language and literature, which means my knowledge of language analysis is both extensive and wide ranging. I adore English, and teaching; I have tutored around twenty students during my career, so far. I have taught students for whom English was not their first language, students who were D/E borderline - managing to get C grades, along with those students who were wishing to achieve the A/A* grades (now the new level 8). In the summer, I work as an examiner/moderator for AQA and understand the impact that the new reforms have had upon SATs, GCSEs and the new AS levels, which were introduced for the Y12 students (those that were affected by the reforms in September 2015). I know that some parents are a little confused over the new progress 8 scores, so I am able to make that a little clearer for you and equate it to the old system for you. Exams are now completely linear, meaning students are judged solely on their performance in the exams. There is no coursework or controlled assessments.

I have also tutored students for entrance exams - I have been to the Turkish embassy in London to tutor two boys for a prestigious school and I also taught an 11 year old boy on a film set for 8 weeks.

Tutoring Experience:

After completing my degree, I undertook my teacher training at Queen Mary's Grammar School, before moving back to Shropshire and working in local schools. I have held a wide range of responsibilities, such as Literacy Coordinator and Lead for KS5 English.

Having moved to Cheadle in January this year, I have worked as a specialist English teacher in a number of schools in the area. I offer sessions at my home - I may be able to offer sessions at your home, subject to location and availability.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is that it is something which should be seen as a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both the student and myself. One of the greatest satisfactions is when a student goes from "hating" English and finding it difficult, to looking forward to their lessons! My approach has been varied with each child I have tutored, as no two children are the same. Firsly, I don't see any child as being "impossible" when it comes to English. It is about changing their attitudes and the way they feel about English - I aim to make lessons fun, as research has suggested that fun facilitates learning, and often this is a way in, especially with children with barriers in their learning. It is wonderful to see how a child can flourish and completely change and progress in the subject. I enjoy teaching English, whatever the age or ability of the student - from the seven year old needing help with all of his subjects (due to being an EAL speaker) and those students aiming for the grade 8. It is also very rewarding and there is a great sense of accomplishment when students pass their entrance exams. In a one or two hour session, quite often I end up staying longer, because the student is "on a roll" and I don't want to stop them. However, I do sometimes have busy evenings where I have students back to back, and I have to allow for this.

Also, I am on the DBS update service, so you can see my clearance.

Please note that I am unable to write university or A-level essays, I can offer advice and feedback on what has already been written, but I am not prepared to write an essay.
