With over eight years experience as Head of Maths in the private sector I feel I have what it takes to inspire a love of Maths in my students.
I have successfully introduced many initiatives, some of them being: UKMT Team Challenges, UKMT Junior and Intermediate, UKMT Mentoring sessions in collaboration with UCL University, Cambridge Summer School for Gifted pupils, Primary Maths Challenges, Maths Weeks, Maths Circus Days, World Maths Days, PI Days in March 14.3(3.14 in US format), London Schools Maths Championship, Cake Sale Days, Maths Olympiad Days, Centre of Excellence team, Maths Masterclasses, Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses, Cambridge Maths Roadshows, Maths Games clubs at lunchtimes, National Cipher Challenges, Problem of the week/Code breaker of the week/Mathlete of the week ongoing challenges, “Maths in another dimension”Maths conference at Liverpool Street London, Maths Countdown event with Rachel Riley, Russian Maths Battles/ Tournament of towns, competing in Maths DCBeagle Challenges, UKMT and Cayley KCS Maths Challenges.
The local authority also wrote about some of my events in the local newspapers, nationally and internationally.
I have been disappointed of the provision for gifted pupils in Maths in the majority of schools. It is my passion to identify and nurture them in order to create a strong community of mathematicians within every school.
Since I was a child, growing up in a family of Mathematicians I became very interested in discovering the mysteries of Mathematics and got very much involved in problem solving. I also hold diplomas from the Mathematical Contests. In my University years and after I became a teacher I had the honour to collaborate with my high school and university teachers in writing mathematical books and textbooks accredited by the Ministry of Education in Romania.
I gained a Master degree in July 2005. Teaching for two years whilst doing the Master I feel that I am qualified to work at the highest standards required, being able to assess and implement my knowledge as having a great desire to develop.
I am an ambitious person, willing to develop all the time, who wants to make a difference.
Having won a Maths Olympiad as a child, I am passionate about Maths teaching and it is an aspiration to pass on my enthusiasm to my pupils. The real task of teaching Maths needs to start as young as possible if pupils are to gain numerical fluency. It is with new challenges standards are raised. I planned and organised a Maths Conference for teachers and educators at Bishopsgate Institute in Liverpool Street, London which was well attended with excellent feedback.
The next generation of school leavers need be more literate and numerate, able to comprehend figures at a glance, in order to compete in a complex and fiercely competitive worldwide market. I am tremendously grateful for the skills I have been given and the expert tuition which I received in my formative years. I am using a variety of teaching methods and techniques from different parts of the world, from Eastern Europe to Singapore, China, India. I am a great believer of Vedic Maths and introducing the Chinese method of multiplication.
I had the opportunity to be a part of the SW London cluster group of some of the most successful private schools in the country.
Over 8 years experience of working as Head of Maths in the Private Preparatory Schools in SW London.
I aim to provide a solid grounding in the subject while paying close attention to the needs of the individual.
An initial meeting establishes the student’s needs and the direction tuition should take. We begin work on a programme of study which focuses on filling gaps in knowledge and addressing any areas of weakness.
Often, this involves looking in detail at mathematical understanding – the kinds of things that tend not to happen in a busy classroom.
I set regular homework– the quantity varying with how much time the student has – and give feedback the following session.
