I have more than 40 years' experience in Research and Development, leading and managing engineering design. My fields have ranged from mobile phones (from first generation to current "4G") and industrial machines the size of a house for precision processing of plastic film. The core subjects of Physics and Mathematics are and have always been the foundation blocks for this work.
My work in industry has always been based on a solid understanding and daily use of Maths and Physics. Training new graduates and even challenging experienced engineers when solving problems has long been part of my everyday work. For Maths, in particular, I can always bridge the gap from the seemingly esoteric academic element to the real-world deployment - the "why do we do this?" question.
I have also worked as a Visiting Lecturer in tertiary college engineering departments. Level 2 to HNC.
My approach is always to coach a student in the fundamental elements of the subject. When tutoring, rather than repeat the basic elements already delivered in class, my role is to understand the gaps in the student's understanding and help the student bridge them, whilst at the same time reinforcing end extending their skills.
