Newry Tutor

I'm a graduate of both Cambridge University and University College London (UCL), with a background in history and modern languages. I have an avid interest in the humanities in general, however, and offer tuition in history, English, German and French (among others).

I've previously worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) in a secondary school, and a student mentor and ambassador. I've also co-founded (and written for) a website dedicated to sharing historical research with the public. The common thread running through all these was my enthusiasm for sharing what I've learnt with the widest possible audience – which is also what drives me as a tutor.

When I'm not tutoring, I work as a translator and editor of academic texts.

Tutoring Experience

Over the last ten years, I've taught English as a Foreign Language in the UK, Poland and Russia, at both summer camps and term-time language schools. I also worked for two years as an LSA at a London secondary school, providing classroom and one-to-one support for students with a variety of special educational needs.

These roles have given me considerable experience of developing teaching strategies based on the needs of individual students, and of working with them to discover the most effective way of achieving their goals.

Both my teaching and my academic work have also made me a skilled 'explainer' of topics. I have a knack for breaking up or distilling complex problems, and adapting them to the students in front of me. In the same vein, I'm also good at identifying where and why students are having difficulty with a particular topic, and working out the best way to rework and clarify it.

Tutoring Approach

As a tutor, I'm generally friendly, approachable and encouraging, and make it a priority to develop a good rapport with each student. I also believe in a flexible approach to tuition: I always try to use a wide range of teaching techniques and materials in my lessons. Before starting with a new student, I also work with them to develop a profile of their abilities, needs and objectives. This ensures that lessons remain organized and productive throughout.

My aim, in short, is to make every lesson focused, goal-oriented, accessible and (if possible) fun!
