I have a life-long love of English in general and of Shakespeare and poetry in particular, and have always enjoyed communicating that enthusiasm to other people, helping them to develop understanding, confidence, appreciation and a love of language. I have an MA degree in English from Cambridge University and am an IGCSE examiner for the Cambridge International Examinations Board.
My early background in retail management, several years at director level in international advertising, then thirty years as a teacher, with theatre running as a constant thread throughout my life, all combine to make me a particularly effective communicator.
As well as offering private tuition, I also run school drama workshops, direct plays, and work as a freelance writer/editor and voice-over. I have been involved in over fifty theatrical productions - acting or directing - as well as giving regular readings and public presentations.
Having lived and worked professionally for several years in France, I am fluent in French and can also offer coaching in French literature and language.
"Simon is one of the most articulate individuals I have ever encountered in my many years of teaching and he brings a passion and enthusiasm to the classroom, which is highly infectious. He has a wonderful rapport with people of all ages, especially children. He also possesses an exquisite and rather mischievous sense of humour, something which has made working with Simon a privilege. (John A. - colleague 2014-2017)
"Simon's love of literature and drama, superb communication skills and rapport with pupils enable him to excel as a teacher and Head of Department." (Sarah L. - parent and colleague 2004-2008)
"Simon is the complete professional, directing and managing large-scale productions, nurturing emerging talent, and running a very successful education programme, as well as being an inspirational teacher himself." (Arnold D. - parent and colleague 2005-2008)
I have been a Head of English and Drama in independent schools for thirty years and am regarded as a charismatic and inspirational teacher. I have many years' experience of Drama in general and Shakespeare in particular on and off stage (studying, teaching, acting and directing).
"Every pupil has selective memories of their teachers. Every past pupil I ever meet selects Simon as their most memorable teacher. They remember his effervescence in the classroom, his delight in their achievements and his encyclopaedic knowledge of Shakespeare." (Tim R. - colleague 1987-2008)
"Simon was simply a brilliant Head of Department, being that rare combination of high academic and able, articulate communicator. His subject knowledge is unmatched in all my teaching experience, especially of Shakespeare's works, and his inspired teaching produced enthusiastic, successful pupils during his twenty years." (Kay C. - colleague 1998-2011)
Need to gain more confidence with spoken or written language? Find Shakespeare hard to cope with, or poetry difficult to understand? Wish to develop your creative writing ability? Need to practise interview technique and improve presentation skills? I can help. I give coaching in drama, literary analysis and practical criticism, particularly of poetry, and I specialise in teaching Shakespeare.
In addition, my earlier background in advertising and marketing is particularly useful in helping students develop their interview technique and presentation skills.
(For adults wishing to learn more about Shakespeare or to understand and appreciate poetic technique, I am happy to undertake small groups - please enquire about special rates.)
"Simon is an inspirational teacher of English Language, Literature and of Drama. His ability to engage and motivate pupils is of the highest order as is his pursuit of excellence in all that he does, both within the classroom situation and in workshops. All of this is well reflected in the results he has achieved, in particular with both academic English and Drama scholarship candidates over his years in post." (Dr Gerry H. - parent and former Managing Director Open University Worldwide)
"Thank you for getting me through my IGCSE exams, but more importantly for evolving my views and beliefs, inside and outside of literature. Thank you again for inspiring a previously uninterested teen, and in him installing the necessary foundations for a life of reading and learning. The worth of this is indescribable and will never be forgotten." (N. - June 2018 - a private pupil)
