Personal Description:

I am 38 and have recently spend 14 years living in California both as a student and working as a high school teacher. My other interests include acting, playing guitar and writing music, gaming, dancing and travel. I also have research experience with physics and enjoy writing prose and blogging.

Tutoring Experience:

I've taught at both the high school level in the US as well as the secondary level in the UK for a number of years. I have also instructed 1st and 2nd year university physics and maths. My UK teaching experience has gone up to the A-level/Adv Higher standard. I have worked with a variety of special needs students, those struggling with science and maths and those needing extension work in preparation for university entrance.I currently teach at a highly ranked independent school in Ashford, Kent.

Tutoring Approach:

While preparation for exams and testing is always important, I prefer to focus on actual comprehension and the ability to perform effective problem solving. Many tutoring students have issues in maths and science because whilethe idea is taught well, actually solving problems seems like an inpenetrable idea. I like to teach a modular approach of breaking problems down into small easily managed chunks and providing a procedure to solve common physical and mathematical problems. I like to think I'm naturally approachable and calm with students, who are often very stressed and concerned when they come to me. It's my believef that *everyone* can manage these subjects with the right preparation and patient teaching.
