Media / Communication Studies
The first point I would like to share is that I am passionate about the medium of photography. Since leaving college in 1983 I count myself very fortunate to have been continually employed in this industry. A career that has resulted with me meeting and working with very interesting people and traveling all over the world. Throughout my time as a commercial/PR/Editorial Photographer I have made it a top priority to keep my personal portfolio 'alive', continually developing it's look and feel and in doing so carving out a very individualistic style. By way of exhibiting whenever/wherever possible I see it as a great compliment that my work has been taken abroad by clients to places such as Milan, Paris, New York and Barcelona. Further information is included below but least to say I extremely enjoy sharing my knowledge. My aims are to encourage, enlighten and inspire and assist you in anyway so that you too may expand your photographic knowledge and expertise and reach your personal goals.
I have taught evening classes and worked three years as Photographic Officer within a University. Some of my duties included demonstrating darkroom processing and printing methods, with over 10 years experience with Adobe Photoshop I was also responsible for guiding students through digital scanning, retouching and manipulation techniques. As stated below I also gained my City & Guilds 7302 teaching certificate.
Currently I teach photography privately and help run workshops with a London based training company.
I find that my intuitive teaching style has developed from two main foundations. A natural desire to teach and the personal reward I receive from witnessing somebody progress through the subject. I'm also very aware that teaching is a two way interaction, with this in mind it is very important that I monitor the student's understanding at key stages by way of question and answer feedback opportunities through the lesson.
I take a ground up approach, begin with the basics and assume nothing. Necessary for the young of course, however mature students may have built their knowledge on pieces of information ( with varying degrees of accuracy) and bypassed certain areas completely. So, without wanting to seem patronising, I take things slowly to begin with but focus on the main sections of the subject. Parallel topics will be touched on, such as the history of photography, but these are always taken in context rather than dwelt on.
Learning can and should be fun, fulfilling and rewarding. I aim to take the tutees to their highest possible level and through this discover more about the subject and themselves.
