Personal Description:

I am a finalist at the University of York, reading towards a BSc in Economics and Econometrics. Upon completing my A-levels, I embarked upon a year of formative work and travel in Europe; predominantly France. Presently, I am engaged in a yearlong exchange at the University of Hong Kong. This summer I will travel to Nepal, where I will spend two months as a statistical research intern at the Institute for Integrated Development Studies. After graduating, I hope to undertake an MSc at European institution.

I am fluent in English and Italian, capable of conversing in French, and having spent a year in Hong Kong am able to understand some (very little!) Cantonese. The funds derived from tutoring I plan on splitting between the now prohibitive costs of further education, and future trips abroad.

Tutoring Experience:

My travels in Europe were funded by tutoring sessions which I gave during my A-level exams. Previously, I have tutored pupils in GCSE Mathematics, English, Business Studies, and foundation science. While in Hong Kong, I also gave occasional English lessons to pre-GCSE pupils.

Whilst many tutors will have been taught under the previous GCSE system, or even the O-level system, my year was the first to undertake the new syllabus GCSEs. Having achieved dignifiable results in both my A-levels and GCSEs, I believe that through my experience I may extrapolate points of difficulty of my own, and apply these to students with subjects specific troubles.

In my first year at York I was ranked in the top 95% of my cohort, having averaged 77.9% over the year (including 94% in Mathematics I and 87% in Statistics I). In York, too, my year was the first to be examined under the revised economics syllabus; which in particular saw year one students sit what would have been year two exams in micro and macroeconomics. I feel confident, therefore, in my ability to tutor students undertaking first year economics exams at the University of York.

Tutoring Approach:

Where many will teach with a view to passing exams, it is my belief that if true enjoyment can be fund in a subject a good grade will follow naturally. A certain amount of subject specific knowledge will always have to be learnt mechanically, and for that reason the first few lessons will be spent testing the student's theoretical knowledge of the subject being taught. Latter lessons will however focus on the real world applications of the subject, and in particular will relate the subject's use to the student's own interests.

I have access to a wide range of text books which helped me through my studies (which I am willing to lend), as well as exam papers dating from the present date through to 2004 published by the following exam boards: AQA, OCR, WJEC.

For economics students at the University of York, I have access to redacted notes taken from textbooks and core readings. In preparation for summer exams, I would also be happy to share revision aids made during my first year; including detailed essay plans for Historical Perspectives, and custom excel program which generates questions very similar to those in the Macroeconomics I exam.
