Shahana

Dagenham Tutor

An experienced educator with more than 25 years' experience of teaching in a secondary school setting, both as a Maths teacher in Bangladesh and a Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Intervention Tutor in the UK. I hold Masters in Education and Special Education and have created and used innovative interactive resources for teaching Maths and Bengali at my current school, including using SmartBoards.

I am happy to offer home tuition or home-schooling as required by the tutee in the Redbirdge area. I have a confident and caring approach towards tutoring; I believe that challenging the student to digest and assimilate new concepts is the best way to aid their learning. Moreover, I believe using a number of resources to tackle a topic aids in keeping the student's interest and helps to further long-term understanding of the topic for exams.

I am especially competent in working with children with special education needs as well as highly-achieving students.

Tutoring Experience

10 years' teaching experience as a senior Maths teacher in a leading Government High School in Bangladesh.
16 years' experience as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Intervention Tutor at the Co-Operative Academy, Leeds
16 years' experience as a private tutor for students at Key Stages 1-4 in Maths, English, Science, Bengali in Leeds
10 years' experience working in an after-school Homework Club for the community in Leeds, working with students aged 10-16 years old.

I have an extensive knowledge of the National Curriculum at all levels

Tutoring Approach

I have a welcoming and friendly personality and am readily willing to adapt to the student's learning style. I am patient and willing to give the student time to understand the information, as opposed to rushing through the syllabus without checking for understanding. I am highly experienced in working with children with learning difficulties, but am equally confident in pushing gifted students towards higher-level concepts which may be beyond their current syllabus - both approaches have seen success from my tutees over the years.

I regularly pause to check understanding and test students using my own interactive resources; students are highly receptive to these as an alternative to traditional forms of learning, and this greatly increases their engagement towards the tutoring sessions. However, I am well-versed in the National Curriculum and understand the expected levels for students of all age group and make individualised teaching plans accordingly.
