I am a teacher of Mathematics and History and, until recently, I also taught some English up to GCSE. I enjoy developing student's academic abilities and seeing them achieve high results, which opens so many doors for them.
I worked as a teaching assistant for two years. I worked in a tutoring role to improve the grades of 16 year olds, particularly in English and maths but also in History, Geography and Business Studies. I worked with them on coursework, exam technique, revision and general academic ability. We helped to improve the life chances of so many of our students by raising the results of students who were predicted E grades up to grade Cs.
I now work as a teacher of mathematics where I have become highly proficient in the 9-1 specification, which is the new grading system that will be used by exam bodies from 2017, whilst also incorporating new content from the a-level curriculum.
I have also worked with students with special needs, including ADHD and autism.
I approach tutoring in the same way I approach teaching: individualisation. Each student will start at a different place, and the first thing I will do is assess where their strengths and weaknesses lie. From here, I will build a comprehensive list of what they are good at and what they need to work on. If the student already had an idea of what they struggle with then this is even easier! From there, I will try to vary the topics, recognising that not every topic needs to be mastered, particularly if a learner is struggling or becoming frustrated. Ultimately, my goal is to foster independent learners who seek to improve their knowledge and skills independently.
