Mathematics is a world of endless opportunities that truly excites me. It fascinates me to know that our society today is based almost entirely on the foundations of Mathematics and that it permeates every aspect of life, from city traffic control to the algorithms that drive Netflix movie suggestions. This year I started studying Mathematics at Newcastle University. The experience has reinforced my passion for the subject and broadened my understanding of what is possible using mathematics. I have spent the last few months communicating highly technical ideals in a beautifully stylized and efficient way.
I see myself as a young and enthusiastic person who can relate to a lot of students looking for some extra assistance in their studies. I am a very sociable and open minded individual who is very patient and understanding when it comes to peoples needs/difficulties. I am confident and assured when giving advice and this mixed with a friendly approach to any problem a student may have allows me to create a relaxed and effective work environment.
Although I have no official experience when it comes to tutoring I have always been one to help other students/friends when they have needed it. In my previous school I would often take time out of my day (lunch times, break times, sports activities etc… ) to help mentor some of the younger students, in a range of subjects but in particular Mathematics. I always received positive feedback from the students and never got the sense that they felt awkward around me or were uncomfortable/unable to ask me a question.
Although my only experience relating to tutoring comes mentoring fellow students in a school environment, I always took the role seriously. I helped them to the best of my ability and never questioned any query they made. I am desperate to get more professional experience in this field and am confident I can supply a very good service to any student.
Having had experience with getting a tutor myself I have always felt that an effective tutor is someone who is not only knowledgeable in the field, but also someone who is confident and sociable and makes you feel comfortable. I have never carried on receiving a service form a tutor unless they created an environment for me in which I could ask them any question I desired and could effectively learn from them.
I also feel that the tutor has to put just as much effort into their work (when it comes to the preparation fro each session) as the tutee does. I think that the final result/grade a tutee gets not only reflects their work but also the quality of their tutor. Both parties need to work together to the best of their abilities in order for the best outcome to be achieved.
A lot about tutoring for me is time. Spending enough time on each problem a student has in order for them to grasp the concepts of the problem so they can tackle future problems with confidence and understanding. Rushing a session, for me, is counter productive. The best results are achieved when the tutee is given time, help and assurance in order for them to achieve their full potential.
