After spending some time working as a professional economist in the Government Economic Service and then for a City Investment firm, I decided that I wanted to work and help inspire students in the study of Economics and Business as I had benefited from during my formative years. Making the decision to give up employment to retrain as a teacher was not an easy decision, but 20 years later it was the most rewarding professional decision that I have made.
I have taught both Business Studies and Economics from GCSE - AS/2 Level (+IB) for 20 years working with students across all ability levels and personal circumstances to achieve the highest outcomes and securing the grades they need to move onto University or employment. My residuals remain positive indicating that my students perform better in Economics than their other A levels. I have provided training to Economics and Business departments and teachers across the UK on how best to improve results and get increased proportions of their students into Oxbridge and other members of the Russell Group of Universities.
I have been nominated on two occasions by my students for a national teaching award, reflecting how my students view my teaching. Moroever, the successful outcomes of my students as the only teacher of economics resulted in my school being formally recognised on more than one occasion by The Good Schools Guide.
I have worked as a classroom teacher through to Head of Department, Head of Sixth Form and Deputy Headteacher. Therefore, to maintain credibility as senior leader I have had to ensure that I maintained outstanding outcomes for my students.
I have worked for UK and overseas examination boards for 20 years and during this time I have held the role of Principal Examiner and Team Leader. I currently exam for the key UK examination boards on the new A level specifications, giving me a deep understanding of what students need to do ensure they achieve the top grades. I have successfully worked with students at very short notice in the remaining few weeks before their exams to address misconceptions, hone their examination technique and boost confidence!
I believe that a young person can only make progress if they are not scared to make mistakes along the way. Therefore, I always ensure that I get to know my students so that I can support them in a way that suits their learning style.
I am very approachable and use this quality to support students but to foster a sense of independence so that they are more able to take control of their own learning. This has been welcomed by students and parents alike!!
I seek to develop the higher order skills of my students so that they are more adept at tackling the more complexed questions on the exam paper and avoid common misconceptions.
Above all, I ensure that my students enjoy their lesson and see it as something to look forward to rather than a means to an end! Essentially, they know that they matter!
