Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified (QTS status) Secondary Music Teacher and am a graduate of a Masters in Music Therapy from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. I have taught KS3 up to KS5, including students with SEN, and am able to teach a variety of disciplines: musical understanding, analysis, harmony, theory, performing and/or composing. I always really enjoy seeing the progress children can make with my guidance. Holding QTS status means that I am able to also tutor other subjects such as English up to KS3.

As well as having been a teacher of music I also play keys/piano in the band April Blue which is a popular soul/R & B band based in Hertfordshire. I am very lucky to have this 'practicing musician' experience alongside my postgraduate studies in Music Therapy as they greatly compliment each other.

I trained as a jazz pianist and alto saxophonist from my school days and went on to graduate in 2010 with a 2:1 BA hons Music degree from the University of Southampton and then went on to complete my PGCE in Music from the University of Sussex before I started my Masters at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge in 2015.

I am really passionate about education and extremely knowledgeable in effective ways to guide you to understand and learn through deeper thinking, rather than spoon feeding you all the information, as you will never remember the learning this way!

Tutoring Experience:

As I have taught all key stages (3-5), I am able to effectively teach through fun and creative ways in order to build confidence in understanding and also enhance motivation for revision/practice. My knowledge of English and teaching those with SEN is also invaluable when tutoring individuals with differing needs and learning styles.

I understand the requirements at both GCSE and A level (specialising in Edexcel) and am able to identify particular aspects of the course that you may need extra support in. I can also provide materials (past papers etc) and creative ways to help you improve quickly.

I have experience in tutoring sixth formers in preparation for their AS and A2 level exams - I specialise in the harmony (SATB/Bach chorales) and instrumental set work analysis part of the A level course.

Tutoring Approach:

One to one is definitely the most effective way of learning/revising, but this must be approached in a positive, patient and encouraging way. It is much easier to understand something once you have the confidence in your ability to try - we learn through making mistakes so I will always encourage independent learning and pace each session according to your knowledge, understanding and confidence.

I am more than happy teaching individuals, pairs or small groups. You would get an initial consultation so I can identify your targets and weaker areas that may need extra support. I would then carefully plan each session according to your individual requirements, carefully tracking your progress so you can realise your improvements.

I always offer an encouraging and positive learning environment with an emphasis on making mistakes is okay - it's how you learn from them that I am here to help with so you don't make them again!
