Sarah

I have over 15 years of experience working with young people. I have always enjoyed science and have a great passion in making children explore the world in terms of scientific understanding. I am a bubbly person which stems from my highly competitive nature as a sports person and previously as a teacher of Physical Education. It is my desire to be a role model to my students and it is my visions to inspire students, and to allow them to leave secondary school with their eyes wide open to the many opportunities and paths that lie in front of them.

I completed my PGCert in Physical Education and my undergraduate degree in Sports Science at Brunel University, where I studied biomechanics, and applied human anatomy and physiology. Although I thoroughly enjoyed teaching PE, studying these modules at Brunel University sparked a passion for teaching Science as a career progression and that spark continues to burn brightly. Adaptability is a key strength of mine, which I believe has assisted me throughout my career teaching a range of subjects. I have taught Combined and Triple Science for 7 years with the major three examining boards and I have never looked back into teaching PE. There’s something about pupils learning about Le Chateliers Principle and rates of reaction that motivates me to really do best by my pupils.

Tutoring Experience

Adaptability is a key strength of mine, which I believe has assisted me throughout my career teaching a range of subjects. My hard work, commitment and dedication became evident when within 3 months into teaching Science; I was promoted to Learning Manager for KS3. I set high expectations for all pupils I teach and for myself. My biggest achievement in my Science career was in my first year teaching science where my early entry class achieved 100% A-C pass rate. I also felt empowered when shortly into that academic year, my Learning Manager gave me sole responsibility for managing year 9 who were studying the new Edexcel GCSE curriculum, where I welcomed and was very grateful for the opportunity.

I have created schemes of work following DfE guidelines, taught AQA, Edexcel and OCR syllabuses, and with the new curriculum changes, found it easy to adapt. This process allowed me to lead by example, plan, review, and implement ideas, and use performance and attendance data to create assessments and implement effective interventions for identified students. I have implemented teacher plans to ensure consistency within the department and provided a curriculum that stretches and challenges pupils, by introducing high level skills such as balancing equations and transformer calculations for KS3. I also provided plenty of opportunities for pupils to develop their extended writing skills with 6 mark questions from previous exam papers and introducing them to controlled assessment style planning.

I have had many roles in the science department including KS3 and 4 coordinators, second in charge and acting head of department. I have taught in a range if schools to over 1000 pupils, all with fantastic results and positive feedback from the students. Prior to teaching, I was a youth worker from Brent, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Ealing council and have over 15 years experience working with young people in formal and informal education settings.

Currently I am an examiner for the AQA Combined and Single Sciences in Chemistry and have been doing this for 5 years.

Tutoring Approach

I’m known as the “mad scientists” by the students and I guess that explains a lot about my personality. As I have over 15 years working with young people, I find engaging and motivating ways, by using real life examples that students can relate to. I provide a range of resources, and exam style questions to help solidify pupil progress. Ask any of my students or previous tutees about Miss Britton and you shall hear nothing but love and admiration from them. I am truly blessed to be working with the future generation and I make it my duty to ensure they succeed in life.
