Personal Description:

I am currently studying Medicine at UCL, in my fifth year, gaining a first class degree in medical physics last year and having previously been educated at Churchill Academy and Sixth Form Centre. My school acquired specialist status in the dramatic arts during my attendance, and although this cultivated my musical interests, teaching was somewhat compromised in other areas. Subsequently, private study was of great importance and identifying valuable and productive work methods was crucial. Having succeeded in this manner, with little direction, I now wish to share these techniques, and new ones I have developed while at UCL, in the hope of assisting students in their academic progression. I have been fortunate enough to share my knowledge of rugby with others and now I wish to diversify into the realms of academia, pairing both my enthusiasm and my experience to offer as much help as possible to all those that would like it.

I am an avid sportsman, participating and progressing in multiple sports. Currently I row for RUMS Men's 1st VIII and competed at Henley Royal Regatta last year. Rowing itself offers a great opportunity to escape the tumult of the inner city and unwind from studies. When at home I also coach an under 8's rugby team, which I have embraced since injury left me unable to play myself. Music is greatly important to me and playing my saxophone is a method of expression and stress relief, all important in a demanding course. In the summer I play cricket and am often employed at either my family's law firm or the local Butcher's shop which, together, fulfill my interest in enterprise. Above all else I come from a large family and hence have been brought up in an extremely social environment, one in which regular interaction with both familiar and unfamiliar people is extremely valuable.

Tutoring Experience:

I tutored A Level AQA Biology to a 19 year old student. He first contacted me at the end of March and we had regular two hour sessions every week until his exams. Occasionally I would also assist him and his friends with their mathematics as well. We first assessed the amount of material we needed to cover and from this created a timetable for the rest of our sessions. I would plan each of these sessions prior to meeting and we would then briefly read through the material and expand on those parts which weren't understood so well. I would compose a list of questions that I thought covered the fundamentals from the previous session and we would spend 15-20 minutes answering these at the start of every session.

Having performed well in Biology and Maths at A-level, these would be my specialist subjects, teaching Physics and Chemistry also, if required. As a medical student I am completely immersed in science as a whole, developing techniques of studying across the spectrum of learning styles and practicing a higher level of organisation in order to achieve the ambitious goals I set myself. I am approachable and empathetic, understanding the difficulties of rigorous study, having encountered them personally, and can offer proven methods for success in overcoming such hardships. Most importantly, I exercise strong interpersonal skills which facilitate the rapid formation of a strong rapport, giving me reassurance that a functional relationship with any tutees will be founded.

Tutoring Approach:

I develop a lesson plan prior to each lesson. On the first lesson I discuss areas of improvement with the student and areas which they would especially like to focus on. We would also discuss the methods they use to learn and from this I would hope to gleam a little about the learning style which suits them best. If suitable I would like the tutee to do a little background reading prior to the session so we could then run through questions, or discuss any confusing topics during the session. Following each session I would consider setting a small amount of "homework" just so the knowledge is recapped in the time between lessons. I would also set a small quiz for the start of every lesson which would cover the fundamental points of the previous session.
