Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I started playing the piano when I was six and have been singing since I was able to talk. Whilst I am somewhat of a rock music lover at heart, I love all genres of music and have always enjoyed learning about and developing my own understanding of music from all styles and time periods.
I completed my Music degree back in 2008, having studied everything from British Rock Music to 19th Century Italian Opera. As a grade 8 pianist and vocalist, I have always loved performing and still regularly perform as part of an amateur dramatics society and at performance events within my current teaching post. I am most at home when performing musical theatre pieces, but have also been known to sing both Mozart and Motley Crue on different occasions!
Outside of teaching and music, I live at home with my partner and two cats, Leia and Igor.
I have been teaching Music at secondary schools in Kent for six years. For the last three years I have been the Music Specialist and Second in Performing Arts Department at a Kent grammar school, delivering both GCSE and A Level with a high success rate. I am most familiar with Edexcel at both GCSE and A Level, but have transferable skills and experience in performance and composition across all exam boards. I have also taught Music Technology at A Level for the last three years. I am fully conversant with all new Edexcel Music/Music Technology exam specs across GCSE and A Level.
I have also taught BTEC Music Level 2 and 3 in the past, and have spent a great deal of time supporting pianist and vocalists in developing their performance skills. I have led a number of ensembles including choirs and a variety of instrumental groups.
I am responsible for the creation and development of a number of KS3 schemes of work across all the schools I have worked in, having taught Drama and Performing Arts as well as Music as a more focused subject.
I also have experience in teaching nursery children in a weekly group music setting, exploring sound and using practical music tasks to help further numerical understanding, vocal control and social development.
My passion for music is what led me into teaching - the desire to share my passion with others and to help foster a true interest and love for music in our young people. As a tutor I can tailor our sessions to meet your needs, focusing on the more challenging areas that you need help with, particularly for GCSE and A Level students.
I believe that, as a teacher, children should not be spoon-fed information. It is our job as educators to help you develop the skills you need to access of areas of music and any relevant courses. I can help facilitate your learning by helping you develop the tools you need to approach, explore and analyse music across a wide variety of genres, whether it is for study or pleasure, helping you to develop transferable skills and techniques that you can use throughout the rest of your education and beyond.
